Be awake and alert
  • Make sure that you are aware of what is going on around you at all times – be prepared for anything!
  • Look out for pedestrians and vehicles – both are equally likely to provide a hazard to you.
  • Make sure you can look over both your shoulders while cycling without also moving your bike, you need to be able to look all around you without swerving.

Spacial Awareness

  • Taking up more room on the road will ensure that vehicles give you a wider berth when going round you, so cycle a bit further from the kerb.
  • Don’t get too close to parked cars – it’s a common mishap to be knocked off by the opening of a car door.
  • Go to the front of the line of traffic when you get to red lights – this will increase how visible you are to other road users.
  • Always make sure that heavy goods vehicles are totally aware of you – make eye contact and ensure that you are in their view at all times.
  • Be careful of traffic in the bus lanes – this can also be motorcycles and taxis as well as buses
Be Bright – Wear a Light
  • It is the law that you must have a white light at the front and a red light at the back when it is dark.
  • Make yourself as reflective as possible – you can buy strips which can be stuck onto your clothes, your bike and your helmet.
  • It isn’t the law to wear a helmet but it is advisable that you do – and make sure it doesn’t move on your head, it needs to fit properly to be effective.
