The 2010 Bike Hire System
And lo, a greener London shalt be born. Yes, there is a plan, and this plan is for a brand new Cycle Hire system to be introduced to the Capital in summer of 2010.

About:

This new scheme is going to host a number of cycle docking stations around London (one every 300 metres supposedly), so you can pick up a bike at one destination and then drop it off when you’ve finished somewhere else. So you could cycle across London without having to cycle back as there is no obligation to return the bike to the original place of hire.

Where?

The idea is going to be tested in the innermost area of London – something equivalent to that of Zone 1 – but the area may grow larger in the future.

Take a gander at the map here...

So, how many are we looking at?

The approx numbers planned are...
  • 6,000 cycles
  • 400 cycle stations
  • 10,200 docking points (allowing approximately 1.7 per cycle should ensure users can return bicycles to the docking point of their choice)
  • An area of approximately 44km2
